In addition to the methods discussed, some other nonparametric methods may also be applicable to test for differences in maximum lifespan. These include the Wilcoxon rank-sum test (or the Mann-Whitney U-test) for two independent samples and the Kruskal-Wallis oneway ANOVA for multiple groups. Indeed, the Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Mann-Whitney U-test are analogous to the t-test and can be appropriately used to test for the difference in median between two independent groups by using the ranks of the raw data. In general, nonpara-metric methods are more robust when the assumptions of parametric methods are not satisfied and/or when the sample size is small. Of course, there is a trade-off in that nonparametric methods are less powerful than parametric methods when the distributional requirements have been met. Further statistical evaluations are required to confirm the validity of these approaches when applied to maximum life span studies.
