The feeding activity persists almost completely, and males and females accumulate high lipid values.
It would be interesting to study if the suppression of reproduction favors an allocation of metabolic reserves for maintenance of body integrity in the sense of the ''disposable soma theory'' (see Study of Trade-offs Between Physical Activities, Reproduction, and Longevity; Kirkwood and Holliday, 1979). However, the metabolic consequences that are responsible for this drastic variation in life cycle are nearly unknown.
