Rabbitfishes and surgeonfishes are important in subsistence and artisanal fisheries. The louvar is taken as a minor commercial food fish, as are some of the spadefishes, or bat-fishes. Scats are grown for the live reef food fish trade or taken in subsistence fisheries. Fishes important to the aquarium trade include scats, batfishes, and certain rabbitfishes and sur-geonfishes. The Moorish idol also is collected for aquaria, but they do not do well in captivity.
