Even the most sophisticated electronic monitors cannot necessarily reduce the need for acquiring sound clinical skills such as inspection, palpation, percussion, auscultation, and so on. Even though "fancy" methods for monitoring can facilitate clinical decision making, to date there is almost no evidence that they reduce morbidity and mortality; yet, they can add significantly to the overall cost of care.
