Frailty is an adverse, primarily gerontologic, health condition which is common in aging and identifies a state of vulnerability for adverse health outcomes such as falls, disability, hospitalization, and mortality. Identification Of Frail Older Individuals

Over 30 criteria have been proposed for identifying frail older individuals (Hogan et al., 2003). The set that has attracted the most interest is the one developed by Dr. Linda Fried and her colleagues (Fried et al., 2004). They categorized older individuals as being frail if they have three or more of the following five characteristics diminished grip strength (compared to peers) complaints of fatigue exhaustion limited physical activity (compared to peers) slow gait (compared to peers) and unintentional weight loss. In a validation study, both those who were frail by these criteria and those who were intermediate (presence of one or two of the characteristics) had worse outcomes than nonfrail subjects (those with none) (Fried et al., 2001).
