Heparin Cofactor II

Heparin cofactor II is another coagulation inhibitor. It acts against thrombin, and it is heparin dependent. Heparin cofactor deficiency alone is not associated with thrombosis.1

Protein S is a vitamin K-dependent protein made in the liver that is necessary for activation of protein C. Once protein C is activated, it will deactivate cofactors Va and Villa. Deficiencies of proteins C and S are associated with thrombosis.
