Once the slides from the biopsy and/or aspirate material are stained, the physician will evaluate the bone marrow for overall cellularity, M:E ratio (300 to 500 cells are scanned), maturation of each cell line, marrow-to-fat ratio, and presence of abnormal or tumor cells. The

bone marrow iron store will be evaluated by the use of Prussian blue stain, and the marrow architecture will be observed for abnormalities in the stromal structure (necrosis, fibrosis, etc.).12 These results combined with the patient's complete blood count (CBC) will enable the physician to reach a diagnosis. A copy of a sample bone marrow report is included in Figure 2.5.
